4.6 Million Pounds Safely Delivered: Heavy Equipment Hauling Across Wyoming
INDUSTRY
Electric
EQUIPMENT USED
- 500-ton suspension trailer
- hydraulic platform trailer
- jack and slide
To support the electric industry, Omega Morgan teamed up with Intermountain Rigging and Heavyhaul (IRH), an Omega Morgan company, to successfully manage the large-scale transport of seven transformers weighing approximately 670,000 pounds each.
The project required the team to navigate extreme 8% gravel grades among other challenges. True to form, they met each hurdle with clear solutions backed by decades of experience.
A Multi-Stage Specialized Transportation Workflow
The Omega Morgan and IRH teams executed this large-scale transportation project by repeating a precise workflow a total of seven times.
Step-by-Step Execution
Step 1 – Rail Offloading: The team first offloaded the nearly 670,000-pound transformers from multi-axle rail cars.
Step 2 – Initial Staging: Using a jack and slide system, they then moved each unit to a staging area.
Step 3 – Suspension Loading: Next, the team opened up IRH’s 500-ton suspension trailer and used a jack and slide to position one transformer into the center of the trailer.
Step 4 – Securement: The teams then closed the suspension trailer around the transformer and lifted it for transport.
Step 5 – The Long Haul: The team then transported the one transformer from Laramie to a substation in Medicine Bow.
Along the route, the team deployed two additional trucks to push and pull the primary transport vehicle while on a gravel section of the road with an 8% grade.
For the final quarter mile within the substation, the team loaded the transformer onto a hydraulic platform trailer.
Step 6 – Expert Delivery: Finally, the team offloaded the transformer, placing it onto a pad.
Heavy Equipment Hauling Over Steep Grades
Transporting heavy-duty electrical infrastructure is a feat in any situation, but transporting through the Wyoming landscape can present additional logistical obstacles. Along the route, the Omega Morgan and IRH crews faced a stretch of gravel road with a steep 8% grade.
To prevent issues with traction or stability that might cause delays, the team proactively planned a solution that would provide enough horsepower and control to ensure safe transport. Deploying additional trucks from the extensive Omega Morgan and IRH fleets, they used these vehicles to help push and pull the truck and trailer carrying the load.
Quantifiable Success in Heavy Equipment Transport
With all seven transformers delivered safely and on schedule, the project was a complete success. The combined partnership of Omega Morgan and IRH proved to be a real asset in executing this large-scale transport. Their combined teams and specialized equipment delivered exceptional results for their customer.
