Omega Morgan Hauls a 315,500-lb Transformer from Tacoma To Portland
Omega Morgan’s Portland specialized transportation division was awarded and tasked with transporting a 315,500-pound transformer from Tacoma, WA to Portland, OR. From the start, this project proved to be unique, requiring innovative solutions to overcome road and bridge restrictions and challenges. In the end, the project was successfully completed with safety and efficiency, every step of the way.
HEAVY HAUL TRUCKING AT ITS BEST
The size and weight of this transport proved to be the pivotal detail in planning and executing the project. Once the transformer was loaded onto our 160-ton dual-lane transport trailer, the gross weight ticked up to a massive 620,400 pounds with a height of 15 feet 10 inches and a length of nearly 300 feet. Therefore, we had to design a route plan that bypassed freeway overpasses and avoided roads with lower weight restrictions and tight turns. Our specialized transportation team expertly devised a route plan that fit these criteria. Soon, we were ready to hit the road.
COMPREHENSIVE SPECIALIZED TRANSPORTATION SERVICES
Our crew arrived at Omega Morgan’s Fife storage yard where the transformer was temporarily stored while awaiting transport. When it was time to deliver the transformer, we loaded it onto our 160-ton dual-lane transport trailer and began the trek to Portland.
Once in Portland, our crews had another challenge to surmount. The last leg of the transport required our crews to haul across a large bridge and under an overpass. To accomplish this, we worked in coordination with a local traffic control company to close off bridge access while our truck crossed, and then shut down a portion of freeway as our crews lowered the trailer to crawl under the overpass. From there, our crews drove the final stretch to the substation, where they returned the next work day to off-load the transformer using a jack and slide system.
