4.6 Million Pounds Safely Delivered: Large-scale Heavy Equipment Hauling

When the electric industry needed to transport seven power transformers—each weighing approximately 670,000 pounds—from Laramie to Medicine Bow, WY, they called on Omega Morgan’s strength and trust to get the job done right.
Teaming up with Intermountain Rigging and Heavyhaul (IRH), an Omega Morgan company, we established a powerhouse of experienced crew and heavy-duty equipment to transport the 4.6 million pounds of critical infrastructure safely from rail station to substation.
Precise Workflow for Successful Oversized Load Transport
Moving nearly 670,000 pounds per load requires more than just big trucks; it requires a meticulously planned, multi-stage process. We executed this workflow seven times, ensuring every unit arrived safely:
Step 1 – Rail Offloading: We began by offloading the transformers from multi-axle rail cars.
Step 2 – Staging: Using our jack and slide system, we moved each unit into a staging area.
Step 3 – Suspension Loading: We positioned one transformer into the center of our 500-ton suspension trailer.
Step 4 – Securement: We closed the trailer, securing the load, then lifted it in preparation for hauling.
Step 5 – The Long Haul: The journey included a primary transport vehicle supported by two additional trucks in a push/pull configuration to manage a gravel road with an 8% grade. For the final quarter mile, we transitioned the load onto a hydraulic platform trailer so it could easily move within the substation.
Step 6 – Final Delivery: Our team offloaded the transformer onto its pad.
Powering the Future With Specialized Transportation Expertise
At the conclusion of this project, all seven transformers were delivered safely and on schedule. The successful execution of this project stands as a testament to what the Omega Morgan Group of Companies can achieve together. Our combined skills and equipment are a valuable asset for our customers’ projects.
