Omega Morgan Wins Sc&ra Rigging Job Of The Year Award For Historic Sellwood Bridge Move

PORTLAND, Ore.—April 30, 2014 — Omega Morgan (, has received top honors at the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Annual Conference for the Rigging Job of the Year for its work moving the historic Sellwood Bridge. The winners of the Rigging and Hauling Job of the Year Awards were announced at the conclusion of the SC&RA Annual Conference, April 22 – 26 in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Rigging Job of the Year Award is designed to honor and give special recognition to SC&RA members that perform outstanding achievements in solving problems encountered in rigging.

Estimated to be the longest bridge span ever relocated, and one of the most complicated translations ever attempted, the Sellwood Bridge move took the skilled team of Omega Morgan just over 12 hours to complete.

“Moving a 3,400-ton bridge is no small task. Our team, lead by our Vice President of engineering, Ralph DiCaprio, is no stranger to complex moves, from bridges to heavy transformers, passenger ferries to delicate equipment for high-tech manufacturing,” said John McCalla, President and CEO of Omega Morgan. “To receive such prestigious recognition by the industry’s leading trade associations is a tremendous honor and our team is very fortunate to be recognized in this way.”

The bridge itself was jacked up two inches and slid to its new location using hydraulic jack-and-slide beams. Traffic was then re-routed onto the old bridge, sitting in its new location, while construction of the new Sellwood Bridge takes place parallel to the temporary span.

The project itself has saved Multnomah County, Oregon millions of dollars by reducing construction time and added infrastructure. In addition to the time and cost savings of being able to use the old bridge, by leaving room for the construction of the new $307.5 million bridge Omega Morgan was able to reduce the environmental impact and improve safety for bridge users and workers.
